Cauliflower Giant of Naples 6-cell Punnet
Cauliflower ‘Giant of Naples’ – Heirloom Majesty from Italy
Heritage & History
‘Giant of Naples’ (also known as Giant Naples, Gennarese Giant, Napoli Giant) is a prized heirloom variety from southern Italy, known since the late 1800s. It has long been sought after for its large heads, lush protective leaf cover, and its reputation as one of the finest snowball-types of cauliflower.
Key Features & Growing Notes
Produces large, tight, bright white heads, often well hidden under leafy wraps that protect them from sun and help preserve their colour. Very good leaf cover; leaves curve over the heads which helps protect them from sun-scald and aids in quality of the head. Hardy and tolerates cooler conditions better than many other cauliflowers, making it suitable for cooler seasons and autumn planting. Maturity, Size & Plant Details
Days to maturity: about 70-80 days (for some “Marzatico” strains) when conditions are good; some strains (for later harvests) may take longer.
Head size / weight: Heads can reach 1½-2 kg (≈3-4 lbs) when allowed full growing space.
Plant height & spacing: Plants grow around 45-60 cm tall (18-24 in) and similar in spread, needing room, good soil, and moisture for best performance.
Care Tips
Sow in cooler periods; use seedlings or transplant to extend season where possible.
Keep soil rich in organic matter, well-draining, and consistently moist. Mulch to conserve moisture.
Blanching (tying leaves over the head) helps to keep heads white and prevent sun damage when they start forming.
