Onion Ailsa Craig 5x
Ailsa Craig Heirloom Onion – Sweet, Giant & Storied (5 plants)
History & Heritage
Developed in 1887 by David Murray, gardener for the Marquis of Ailsa, at Culzean Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Named after the small island Ailsa Craig off the Scottish coast.
Key Features
Produces large golden-straw coloured globes, with pale straw/yellow skins and crisp, sweet white flesh.
Mild flavour—great raw in salads, sliced for burgers, or used fresh.
Long-day onion variety—requires long sunlight exposure to form large bulbs.
Grow & Harvest Info
Maturity: About 95-110 days from seed (depending on climate and growing conditions).
Size: Bulbs often reach 1-2 lbs (≈ 450-900 grams) when grown well. Diameter of ~6-8 inches (≈15-20cm) in favourable conditions.
Storage: Not long-term like some storage onions, but keeps reasonably well if cured and stored cool, dry & dark.
Growing Tips
Full sun and fertile, well-drained soil are ideal. Avoid soggy ground. Sow early, allow seedlings to establish with good spacing to allow large top growth before bulbing begins (day length matters). Keep soil moisture consistent, especially in dry periods, but water back when bulbs are filling to avoid splitting.
